When I was just a little boy I can tenderly reminisce sitting on an antique barber chair at the community barber shop and observing my father receiving a haircut and shave. It is not anything like what it is nowadays. There was an art to it. The barber really cared about what he was doing and it was apparent that my father loved it. Not only that, but the barber shop was where gentlemen could socialize amongst themselves.

The haircuts were frequently so detailed. My father would be sitting in one of the many used barber chairs while the barber would purposely take his time to provide the flawless cut. Most men kept their hair short as that was the way back then. After the hair cut was a shave. This was not a shave as we picture today, with foam from a can and a plastic disposable razor. Instead, the lather was put on with a badger brush and a straight blade razor was used. It looks terrifying, but it is the cleanest shave you can ever receive. After the shave was the hot towel that always felt so good.

The men would principally banter about baseball or politics, though the subject of women would come up often. It was a time to be at ease and get to know everyone a little better. Now, when you get a haircut the chatting is kept to a minimum and you commonly attempt to get out as soon as you can.

As I saunter by the local barber shop and make out the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I speculate why this rite has mostly disappeared from our culture. Do people not value a good hair cut and shave anymore? Have we all become so anti-social that spending an some time socializing with our friends and neighbors seems like a job? While I am not one to be angry and only desire for "how things were", I do wish that people will recall and think a lot of the way it was just a few decades ago.
