Attending College For Fashion Design And Merchandising Can Be A Really Exciting Career Option
I'm often amazed to see the how majestic and outlandish the fashion industry has turned into. For some reason it is difficult for me to comprehend people and their utter love for clothing. Don't misunderstand me! I like a good pair of jeans as much as the next guy, but you will not catch me handing over hundreds of dollars for a pair of pants, or even for plus size coats, which can be expensive. Forget that. Not that my preferences have any effect on the style industry whatsoever. Oodles of youthful people are going to fashion styling and merchandising schools to better learn the business. Hey, I can't say that I blame them. There is a whole lot of money to be made there. I'm pretty sure Tom Ford is hungry nowadays.
When I asked my teenage daughter what topic she wanted to pursue, she started rambling on about fashion styling and marketing. Hmm, big surprise! What teenage girl isn't interested in the style industry? And I thought - hey, perhaps she can get me a good deal on my plus size coats! As far as I can tell, they all go gaga over clothes, shoes, and extras. Anyhow, she began taking a secondary school course in style design and merchandising her senior year. Unfortunately she disliked it. Now she is a bit torn regarding her future plans. She still dreams of a job in the clothing industry, but is naturally worried about whether or not she'll like it. I told her to give fashion design and merchandising another shot when she heads off to college next year. And no-one said she had to delve into this particular aspect of the fashion world. There are a few alternatives out there. She could market bathing suits, jeans, evening wear, plus size coats, wedding attire, avant garde fashion...the possibilities are endless.
It is certainly a challenging business. If you really want to see how things work, look at the Style net-work every once in while in order to see true fashion designers in their element. Or you can watch that little reality tv series "The Hills." Even though the main character in this show has a whole lot of cash coming in from her folks, she's getting a good dose of the fashion design and merchandising world. You can see her working as an intern for "Teen Vogue" and get a good idea of what's expected of her. It's definitely not all glam and glitz at the start, but I'm sure any money-making fashion designer can tell you that. You've to be willing to work really hard and compete with the many. The best place to start is a highly recommended fashion design school.
