A Young Male Requires Counseling For His Severe Depression, Relationship Issues, And For His Chemical Dependency

Roughly eight months ago I had breakfast with a thirty-one-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences acute depression, has relationship issues, and who is addicted to drugs and alcohol. As affirmed by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug addiction and his acute depression that has had the most to do with his perpetual relationship problems.

As stated by Benjamin, he is so overwhelmed by his relationship difficulties and by both of his medical conditions that he in actual fact has little or no drive to achieve much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin completed one semester of graduate school in criminal justice.

Benjamin's condition makes me question if he is an illustration of a person who can look in the mirror and perceive his drinking problems and chemical dependency and do something positive about these problems. Or, to the contrary, if he is an individual who has to hit the very bottom before he gets drug and alcohol dependency rehabilitation that leads to lasting sobriety.

It may be asked how treatment would help his drug and alcohol addiction. First of all, there are more than a few newly produced physician-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin through the alcohol and drug detox process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse. Second, in counseling he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to accept the fact that there is utterly nothing affirmative about substance abuse and abusive and unhealthy drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy situations is the route to legal problems, deteriorating health, a premature death, poor work and school performance, shattered relationships, and financial difficulties. Fourth, counseling for his relationship problems and his depression might help him manage these psychological problems more successfully and help create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in counseling he could also learn more about the different symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.

Since Benjamin doesn't have the fortitude to carry out much of anything in his life, it is apparent that he definitely needs some hope for a more productive lifestyle. And the sad thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the therapy he needs for his extreme depression and drug dependence and alcohol addiction and stick with his treatment program.

Benjamin is clearly too young to be defeated in life. He doesn't understand this at the moment but if he can learn how to abstain from alcohol and drugs through alcohol and drug rehab and get the counseling he requires for his severe depression, he can turn his life around and begin living with self-respect, passion, and direction.

Enhanced relationships, positive change, self esteem, and a wonderful life are clearly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can become inspired to get the medical rehab he requires, follow through with his treatment protocol, live his life in a dependency-free and healthy manner, and learn how to develop a more positive attitude about life.
