A Very Young Couple Appraises Their Heavy And Irresponsible Drinking And Their Short And Long-Term Hopes, Plans, And Dreams

Frank and Linda have been dating for eight-and-a-half years. They met while taking the same financial accounting class at a small, rural, private liberal arts college located in the Midwestern part of the United States. While they were mainly good friends at first, they finally started to date when they were in their third year of college.

Since both of them came from very conservative backgrounds, neither one of them drank much beyond the experimental stage when they first started to date. As the time passed by, however, they started to go to more happy hours, football bashes, sorority and fraternity parties, and keg parties. Consequently, they over time began to drink more as time passed by.

After they graduated, they both found employment in a medium size city located roughly seventy miles from their undergraduate college. Then they eventually made up their mind to move in with one another.

With any pivotal transformation in a person's life there is commonly something that starts the particular modification in question. For Linda and Frank the idea of having children and buying a new house was this "catalyst." To put it simply, for the first time in their lives, Linda and Frank started to critically evaluate their irresponsible and excessive drinking and the alcohol long term effects on their lives. As an example, they began to wonder if they would ever experience an alcohol overdose due to their excessive and heavy drinking.

Would their irresponsible drinking negatively affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending a large percentage of their money on drinking if they were to start saving for a new house?

From a different line of reasoning, even though neither one of them ever experienced alcohol poisoning, received a DUI, or experienced alcohol poisoning symptoms, they understood that their irresponsible drinking was becoming a thorny issue that they could not close their eyes to anymore. All of these questions clearly indicated the same conclusion, namely that Frank and Linda needed to understand that they couldn't maintain their irresponsible drinking if their dreams, hopes, and plans were to be met.

Once they came to this conclusion, they told their drinking friends about their their plans to start a family, about their goal of buying or building a new house, and about their marital plans. They also told their drinking pals that they still wanted to associate with them but that they would be drinking responsibly from this point forward so that they could begin realizing their future dreams, goals, and aspirations.

Amazingly, all of their friends expressed relief because they too had been reexamining their lives and concluded that their life-styles were too focused on drinking. They also felt that they would have to change notably if they were to become more responsible and display more consideration for their careers, their health, and for their goals in the next five or ten years.

After their heart-to-heart discussion with their pals about their dreams, hopes, and aspirations, Linda and Frank in essence started to have more meaningful relationships with all of their buddies. The main reason for this was the fact that all of them had the same mentality regarding their irresponsible drinking and their short and long-term aspirations, goals, and plans.
