A Considerate Supervisor Helps A Worker Address His Abusive And Heavy Drinking After A Shattered Relationship

Barry dropped out of high school when he was seventeen years old and eventually found employment at a local metal recycling plant. For the last eight-and-a-half years he has earned a reputation as a hard-working and reliable individual who infrequently calls off work because of sickness.

Roughly four months ago he began dating a young woman named Carol. They seemed to get along real well right away and looked like they had a lot of good times with one another.

When Barry met Carol, he rarely drank. This circumstance totally changed when Barry and Carol began dating on a fairly usual basis. Actually, their relationship was going great until Carol without warning called Barry one night around 4:30 AM and told him that she had to stop dating him and that she couldn't tell him what was going on at that time.

The next morning before he went to work, Barry drove to her condo and found out right away that Carol had already moved out. Barry took this exceedingly hard. If truth be told, he was surprised because they seemed to be getting along so well.

So what did Barry do? Rather than working through his sorrow and pain, he started getting drunk nearly every night. It didn't take very long for his pals at work and for his supervisor to see that Barry was coming to work late at least once every week and that he constantly called off ill. What is more, some of his fellow employees made an appointment with staff in the HR Department and said that Barry time after time came to work with a strong odor of alcohol on his breath or on his clothes.

Barry's boss heard about all of this from Barry's co-workers and from Human Resources. So one Wednesday morning he asked Barry to come into his office. He mentioned to Barry that he had recently noticed an extreme change in his attendance, work performance, sick time, and in his behavior.

"Barry, I'm not an authority about alcohol facts and I'm not especially all that knowledgeable about alcoholism facts, but I have personally seen more than a few of my relatives and friends experience some really destructive issues because of their irresponsible and hazardous drinking. My suggestion is that you take time and learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency can do to an individual."

"Why is this relevant? When people engage in hazardous drinking, their drinking issues not only adversely affect the alcohol abuser, but they also adversely impact her or his relatives, co-workers, family, friends, and neighbors. Barry, in sum, I would like to see you get some help for your heavy and irresponsible drinking from our fine employee's assistance program."

Barry admired his manager quite a lot and as a consequence followed through with his recommendation the next work day when he called and made an appointment with a therapist in the company's employee's assistance program. Even though Barry didn't automatically feel any better or less depressed about the sorrow he still has about Carol, he felt some comfort knowing that his boss and his co-workers wanted what's best for him and cared about him. This gave him some emotional relief for the first time in a number of months and he honestly experienced some hope that he would get back on track with his life.
